Sri Lanka Family Holiday Trip with LankaMe! Amazing 2 week itinerary!

From March 21 to April 5, we took a family trip to Sri Lanka—a place I had long dreamed of visiting.

I’d like to write about our experiences. Our itinerary was as follows:

A Journey Made Easy by LankaMe

Planning a two-week family trip across Sri Lanka can be daunting, especially with young children.

We wanted to explore a wide range of destinations—from bustling cities and ancient sites to safari parks and tranquil beaches—without the stress of figuring out transport and logistics on our own.

That’s why we chose LankaMe’s Platinum Plan, which promised a private driver and guide in one. It turned out to be the best decision we made.

LankaMe
Emma

Our driver-guide Rangana was not just a driver, but a true travel partner who transformed our vacation into an unforgettable adventure.

In this post, I’ll share our day-by-day experiences and how LankaMe’s top-notch service made our journey smooth, educational, and incredibly enjoyable.

Why We Chose LankaMe Platinum (and Loved It)

Before diving into the itinerary, let me highlight what made the LankaMe Platinum Plan so special for us:

Why We Chose LankaMe Platinum

Driver + Guide in One

The Platinum plan provided us with an experienced driver who doubled as a local guide.

Rangana didn’t just take us from point A to B; he enriched our travel time with insights about Sri Lankan history, culture, and daily life.

It was like having a private tour guide throughout the trip, not just a chauffeur.

Tailored Itinerary Planning

Even before we arrived, the LankaMe team (with a Japanese-speaking operator for our convenience) consulted with us to craft the perfect route.

Their pre-trip support was phenomenal. We exchanged emails and WhatsApp messages discussing our interests and needs, and they suggested improvements to our plan (like adding a stopover in Sigiriya on the way back from Passikudah to break up a long drive).

This free itinerary consultation gave us great confidence that we were in good hands from the start.

Family-Friendly Service:

We were traveling with our kids, and Rangana’s attentiveness to our family’s comfort was outstanding.

From child seats and car safety to flexible scheduling for nap times, he was always mindful of what our children (and we parents!) needed.

We felt very safe throughout the journey, and his friendly demeanor won over our kids immediately.

Extra Support at Every Step

Rangana went above and beyond his duties – calling ahead to reserve restaurants for us, knowing the best places to stop for a clean restroom (a huge plus when traveling with little ones), helping with our luggage, and even finding a pharmacy one evening when we needed medicine for our son.

This wasn’t just a driver service; it was total travel support that made us feel cared for all the time. With those points in mind, here’s how our trip unfolded:

Day 1: Welcome at Colombo – Stress-Free Start

Our adventure began at Bandaranaike International Airport, where Rangana greeted us with a warm smile as soon as we cleared customs. After a long flight, seeing a placard with our name and a friendly face was a huge relief.

We immediately felt welcome and safe. The vehicle was a comfortable air-conditioned van, immaculately clean, with plenty of room for our luggage and a child seat already installed as requested.

Despite arriving tired in the evening, we had just one night in Colombo, so we wanted to make the most of it. Rangana drove us to our hotel in the city, and on the way, he gave a mini tour—pointing out the illuminated skyline, the Lotus Tower, and explaining a bit about Colombo’s history and neighborhoods.

We mentioned we were hungry, so he phoned ahead to secure us a table at a popular restaurant in Colombo known for its Sri Lankan rice and curry. Thanks to his call, we walked right in to a delicious first meal without any waiting.

After dinner, he ensured we got back safely and even recommended a short stroll at Galle Face Green (right by our hotel) to enjoy the sea breeze and let the kids run around a bit before bedtime. By the end of Day 1, we were already impressed by how efficient and thoughtful the service was.

Day 2: Scenic Drive to Galle – History by the Coast

The next morning, we set off from Colombo to Galle on Sri Lanka’s southern coast.

Galle Fort

The drive was about two hours via the expressway, and it was smooth sailing. Our kids watched cartoons in the back (the van had WiFi and chargers, a nice perk!), while we enjoyed chatting with Rangana.

He told us about the coastal towns we passed and even taught us a few Sinhala phrases. Halfway through, noticing our toddler was getting restless, Rangana proactively suggested a short break.

He knew of a rest stop with clean toilets and a little snack shop, which was a lifesaver for our family. It might seem like a small thing, but those clean restroom stops made a huge difference for us throughout the trip!

In Galle, we explored the famous Galle Fort area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with charming colonial-era streets.

Rangana’s guiding really shone here: he walked with us along the fort walls at sunset, pointing out landmarks like the ancient lighthouse and Dutch hospital, and recounting stories from Galle’s history as an old trading port.

Ranjana(LankaMe's chauffeur) is guiding in Galle Fort

It felt like a private history tour. He also knew the best photo spots – he took a lovely family photo of us with the ocean in the background.

That evening, we craved fresh seafood, so we asked for a recommendation. Rangana not only suggested an excellent restaurant by the fort’s ramparts, but again called ahead to reserve a table with a great view.

By the time we arrived, a table was waiting and even a high-chair was set up for our little one. We dined on delicious curry crab and prawn curry while watching the waves crash against the fort walls – an unforgettable dinner made possible by our driver’s thoughtful arrangements.

Days 3-4: Safari Adventure in Yala National Park

Leaving Galle, we continued eastward for about 3-4 hours to reach Yala National Park, where we would spend two nights.

Yala national Park

Along the way, we passed through rural towns and beautiful landscapes. Rangana told us about farming life in these areas and even stopped at a roadside fruit stall so we could try fresh king coconut water (he taught our kids how to sip from a coconut with a straw – they loved it!).

Upon arriving near Yala, Rangana had already coordinated with a local safari guide for the next morning’s game drive. Yala National Park is famous for its wildlife (especially leopards and elephants), and thanks to Rangana’s arrangements, we had a jeep and guide ready for us at dawn on Day 4.

We didn’t have to worry about a thing – he had handled the park entry tickets and communicated our pickup time with the jeep driver.

Yala National Park

The safari was a highlight of our trip.

Emma

We saw elephants grazing by a watering hole, crocodiles sunning on riverbanks, peacocks crossing the tracks, and even caught a glimpse of the elusive Sri Lankan leopard lounging on a tree branch!

Throughout the safari, Rangana came along and helped keep the kids engaged, pointing out animals and sharing interesting facts.

His presence made us feel comfortable (especially for me as a parent, it was reassuring to have an extra set of hands with the kids in the bumpy jeep).

By noon we returned, exhilarated and ready for lunch. Rangana knew a clean, family-run restaurant outside the park where we tasted a fantastic rice-and-curry spread.

That afternoon, back at the hotel, we decided to relax, and Rangana was off-duty for a few hours. He made sure we had everything we needed before he left (even checked if the hotel could prepare a mild porridge for our youngest).

In the evening, he took us on a short drive to a scenic coastal spot where we watched the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The two nights in Yala were made so special not just by the wildlife, but by how seamlessly everything was organized by our driver-guide.

Day 5: Into the Highlands – Ella’s Charm

After Yala, our next stop was Ella, a gem in Sri Lanka’s hill country.

The road from Yala to Ella climbs from the dry lowlands to lush, misty mountains dotted with tea plantations. Rangana’s expert driving on the winding hill roads was commendable – we never once felt unsafe or carsick, even as the road snaked upwards.

He drove at a safe, comfortable pace, always careful on hairpin bends (we noticed he would honk lightly before blind corners – a common practice in Sri Lanka to alert oncoming vehicles on narrow roads).

On the way, we took a short break at Ravana Falls, a beautiful waterfall cascading right by the roadside.

Rangana pulled over and let us stretch our legs. He even knew a local vendor selling spicy mango slices – a tasty snack we wouldn’t have discovered on our own! Little surprises like this made the journey itself as enjoyable as the destinations.

We reached Ella by early afternoon. Although we had just one night here, Rangana made sure we saw the highlights. That day he drove us to the trailhead for Little Adam’s Peak, an easy hike with panoramic views of the valley.

While we hiked (it’s a short 30-minute climb), Rangana waited at the base. Afterwards, he suggested we catch the sunset at the famous Nine Arch Bridge.

Nine Arch Bridge

He timed it perfectly: we arrived just as a iconic blue train was crossing the bridge, a picture-perfect moment! Rangana led us down the path to a good viewing spot and helped carry our daughter part of the way.

We truly appreciated having someone who knew the area – it saved us time and the kids got to see something really cool without any fuss.

Emma

That evening, we dined at a cozy cafe in Ella town. By now, we trusted Rangana’s restaurant picks completely and asked him to choose a place for us.

Sure enough, we ended up at a lovely spot with western and Sri Lankan options (to keep the kids happy) and live acoustic music. Rangana had called ahead here too, securing the best table on the balcony. It was a magical night in Ella, made better by zero worries on our part. All logistics were handled, so we could just soak in the atmosphere.

Days 6-7: Cultural Wonders of Kandy

The next morning, we embarked on a longer drive from Ella to Kandy, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka.

On the way, we passed through rolling tea country and even decided on a spontaneous stop at a tea factory in Nuwara Eliya.

Emma

This wasn’t in our original plan, but Rangana happily adjusted the schedule when we mentioned our interest in Ceylon tea. He knew exactly which tea estate welcomed visitors.

We got a quick tour of the factory and sipped on some delicious tea while the kids marveled at the tea pluckers in the fields. One of the advantages of having a private charter was this flexibility – we could change plans on the fly, and our driver-guide would smoothly rearrange things (with a smile).

By evening we arrived in Kandy, where we stayed two nights. Kandy is a bustling city surrounded by hills, known for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

On Day 7, Rangana took us on a guided walk through this famous temple, which houses a relic of Buddha’s tooth. The temple was crowded, but Rangana skillfully navigated us through and explained the rituals and history in a way that even kept our 8-year-old interested (“There’s a tooth of a prince in there?” he exclaimed, mixing up Buddha with a prince—close enough, and a cute memory!).

Emma

Having a guide who could distill the cultural significance into kid-friendly stories was priceless.

We also attended a traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening. Once again, Rangana had arranged tickets for us in advance, so we had great seats and didn’t have to wait in line.

 Kandyan dance performance

The kids were wide-eyed watching the fire dancers and drummers. During our Kandy stay, Rangana’s local knowledge shone: he knew an excellent spot up in the hills (a viewpoint called Arthur’s Seat) to get a panoramic view of Kandy Lake and the city at sunset, and he drove us there for a quiet moment away from the crowds. It was beautiful and peaceful.

Throughout our time in Kandy, Rangana remained attentive and flexible.

When we wanted to shuffle our schedule (we skipped an optional visit to the botanical gardens because the kids were a bit tired, and instead relaxed at the hotel pool), he adjusted without any issue. He would check in with us about how we were feeling and if we wanted to do more or take it easy. This level of personal care made us feel so well taken care of.

Days 8-9: Sigiriya – Climbing the Lion Rock

Emma

Next up was Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress and arguably Sri Lanka’s most iconic site.

We actually visited Sigiriya in two parts of our trip (before and after our beach stay), spending a total of 3 nights in that area (2 nights on the way east, and 1 night on the way back). I’ll combine those experiences here.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress rising above the jungle – a must-visit UNESCO site that we conquered with Rangana’s guidance.

Sigiriya Rock

When we first arrived in Sigiriya (Day 8), Rangana ensured we got an early start the next morning for our climb.

Sigiriya Rock, also known as the Lion Rock, gets hot by mid-day, so he recommended we begin around 7:00 AM. He was absolutely right. The morning was cooler and we also beat the large tour groups.

Rangana walked with us up to the base and arranged a certified local guide to accompany us for the climb (optional, but we appreciated having a specialist explain the frescoes and ruins at the top in detail). He coordinated everything in Sinhala with the guide to make sure our family would be looked after on the way up, then waited for us at the base.

Climbing those steep stairs to the top of Sigiriya with two kids was a bit challenging, but so worth it. The guide (arranged by Rangana) was wonderful, pointing out the ancient wall paintings halfway and telling the legend of King Kasyapa who built the fortress. At the summit, we were rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding jungles and lakes. Standing there, we felt on top of the world.

After the descent, we found Rangana ready with cold water and chilled towels in the van – what a thoughtful touch!

He knew we’d be hot and tired. Later that day, upon our request, he took us to the nearby Dambulla Cave Temple, another cultural treasure (and he managed to engage the kids by turning the Buddha statue spotting into a fun game). We wouldn’t have covered so much in one day if not for his efficient planning.

Dambulla Cave Temple

During both stays in Sigiriya, our driver-guide continued to impress us. On our second stay (Day 13 of the trip, returning from the east coast), we arrived back in Sigiriya in the afternoon.

Sensing that we had already seen the main attractions, Rangana suggested a special side trip: a visit to a local village for an authentic experience.

He arranged a small bullock cart ride through rice paddies and a canoe ride on a lake where we saw lotuses and water buffalo—something we hadn’t even heard of, but ended up loving.

The villagers showed us how they make roti and we had tea in a mud-hut kitchen. This off-the-beaten-path experience was only possible because Rangana knew the area intimately and thought we’d enjoy something unique. He truly functioned as a guide and trip planner, constantly enhancing our itinerary with memorable additions.

Days 10-13: Relaxation in Passikudah – Sun, Sand, and Support

After our first visit to Sigiriya, we headed to the east coast for some beach time. The drive to Passikudah took around 3-4 hours, and we passed through lush forests and rural villages.

Passikudah

Rangana explained that this region was less touristy and developing rapidly after the civil war. We appreciated the context he provided, turning what could have been a dull drive into an educational ride about Sri Lanka’s history and current events.

Passikudah Beach was like a paradise – calm shallow waters, soft golden sand, and very few crowds. We had planned four nights here to just unwind as a family.

This was the longest stretch we stayed in one place, essentially a beach holiday within our tour. Rangana’s service during this time remained excellent but also appropriately low-key;

Playing beach in Passikudah

he knew we were here mostly to relax. He would check in with us each day to see if we needed anything or wanted to explore. For the most part, we lounged by our resort pool and beach, but on two occasions we took advantage of his presence:

  • One afternoon, we wanted to visit a nearby town (Valaichchenai) to experience a local market. Rangana drove us there, guided us through the bustling fish and vegetable market, and helped us buy some spices to take home. Having him translate and negotiate prices was invaluable.
  • Another evening, we felt like venturing outside the resort for dinner. Rangana recommended a family-run seafood restaurant about 15 minutes away that was known for its crab curry. Once again, he called ahead to reserve a table and check their opening times. The dinner was fantastic (probably the best crab curry I’ve ever had), and we’d never have found the place without his suggestion. He even arranged for the restaurant to prepare a non-spicy omelette for our youngest who wasn’t keen on curry.

Throughout our beach stay, Rangana was respectful of our downtime. He wasn’t intrusive at all—he often waited nearby on standby in case we decided to go out, but also encouraged us to enjoy the resort.

On the final day in Passikudah, he proactively washed the van and stocked up on our favorite snacks, since the next day we had a long drive back west. Little details like this, done behind the scenes, showed how much pride he took in his work and our comfort.

Day 14: Return West – Smooth Ride with Thoughtful Stops

All good things must come to an end, and as our trip neared its finale, we had to travel back across the country.

To break up the long journey from Passikudah to the airport, we had planned one night in Sigiriya (covered earlier) and one night in Negombo. Day 14 was essentially a travel day from Sigiriya to Negombo on the west coast.

Emma

By this point, we had been on the road with Rangana for two weeks and he felt like part of the family. The drive was about 4-5 hours, and he made sure it was as comfortable as possible. Toilet breaks?

He’d already marked out the clean washrooms along the route. Sure enough, we stopped at a spotless restroom at a reputable roadside diner he knew, exactly when we needed it.

We cannot emphasize enough how relieving this was – anyone who’s traveled with children knows that clean toilets on the road are like hidden treasures! Rangana’s foresight in this matter saved us from a lot of potential discomfort.

We reached Negombo in the afternoon. Negombo is a beach town close to the airport, known for its lagoon and fishing community. Since it was our last day, we didn’t do much sightseeing, but Rangana offered to take us to the Negombo fish market if we were interested.

We were a bit tired and decided to skip it, opting instead for a relaxing final evening. Of course, Rangana had one more treat up his sleeve: he suggested a beachfront restaurant where we could enjoy a farewell dinner watching the sunset. He arranged a lovely table for us right on the sand with his wife.

farewell dinner in Negombo

As we ate our grilled seafood and reflected on the journey, Rangana shared some of his own life stories – about his family, how he became a guide-driver, and his favorite parts of Sri Lanka. It felt less like a guide talking to clients and more like a friend sharing tales. Our kids even made him promise to send postcards and keep in touch!

Day 15: Goodbye Sri Lanka – Till We Meet Again

On our final day, Rangana drove us the short distance to Bandaranaike International Airport.

He expertly handled the last-minute logistics: ensuring we had left nothing at the hotel, helping us with the airline online check-in before we left (using his phone hotspot when the hotel WiFi gave trouble), and finding us trolleys at the drop-off area.

When it came time to part ways, it was actually emotional. We thanked Rangana profusely for all he had done. We also gave him a small gift from our home country as a token of appreciation (and a well-deserved generous tip).

In return, he gave our kids little Sri Lankan flag keychains to remember the trip. Hugs were exchanged and we took a final group photo together. In just over two weeks, he had gone from being a stranger to a trusted friend and guide.

goodbye Sri Lanka

As we waved goodbye, we realized just how seamless and enriching our Sri Lanka journey had been, largely thanks to LankaMe and Rangana’s exceptional service. We managed to cover so much of the country without feeling rushed or stressed. Every day held a new adventure, and yet we always felt relaxed because the logistics were handled flawlessly.

Final Thoughts: Highly Recommended Experience

Our experience with LankaMe’s Platinum Plan deserves nothing short of a glowing review. It was a 5-star experience in every aspect.

As promised, the Platinum service gave us more than just a driver – we got a knowledgeable guide, a caring assistant, and a true travel companion.

The combination of professional planning support, a safe and skilled driver, and genuine hospitality made our trip special. Here’s a quick recap of why we recommend LankaMe to anyone considering travel in Sri Lanka, especially families:

  • Outstanding Guide-Driver: Rangana was incredibly knowledgeable, fluent in English, and passionate about sharing his country with us. He went beyond driving, whether it was explaining local customs, spotting wildlife, or teaching our kids local songs. Traveling with him was like traveling with an old friend who happens to know every shortcut, story, and secret spot along the way.
  • Safety and Comfort: We always felt safe on the road. The vehicle was comfortable and well-maintained, and Rangana’s driving was cautious and calm. He was punctual every single day and kept the car clean (he somehow managed to tidy up all the sand we dragged in after beach days!). During long drives, he anticipated breaks for food and rest without us even asking. This level of care meant we could just relax and enjoy the ride.
  • Complete Travel Support: LankaMe’s team helped us with route planning, hotel suggestions, and activity recommendations from day one of planning. They were responsive to all our questions (big or small). During the trip, having our driver handle on-the-go needs like restaurant bookings, finding ATMs, and adjusting schedules was a game changer. We never had to worry about the usual travel hassles.
  • Family-Friendly Touch: If you’re traveling with children, this service is a godsend. Rangana was patient and wonderful with our kids. He kept a booster seat ready, played their favorite music in the car, and was always thinking one step ahead to keep them happy (he even surprised them with candies and stickers on a couple of days). Our kids still talk about “Uncle Rangana” and all his fun facts about animals and plants. The journey was educational for them in the best way.
  • Flexibility and Personalization: Unlike a fixed group tour, our itinerary was completely tailored to what we wanted to do, and we could change it as we wished. LankaMe gave us the freedom of independent travel with the convenience of a guided tour. We covered a huge loop of Sri Lanka at our own pace, lingering longer where we wanted and skipping things if we felt like it. That level of flexibility made the trip feel very personal and satisfying.

In conclusion, traveling in Sri Lanka with LankaMe’s Platinum Plan turned out to be the perfect choice for our family.

We saw an incredible variety of places in comfort and gained a deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka through the stories and assistance of our driver-guide. It was more than just a taxi service – it was a holistic travel experience that left us with beautiful memories and a friend in Sri Lanka.

If you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka (whether as a family, couple, or solo), we wholeheartedly recommend LankaMe.

Their motto might as well be “come as a guest, leave as a friend,” because that’s how we feel after our journey. We are already dreaming of our next visit, and when we do return, we know who we’ll be calling to help us explore more of this amazing island. Thank you, LankaMe and Rangana, for a truly wonderful Sri Lankan adventure!

Stress-Free Travel Across Sri Lanka — Private Car Charter

Sri Lanka is packed with highlights—eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Ayurveda, Bawa architecture, safaris, and the famous tea train!

However, if you’re on a short trip, it’s difficult to cover all of these must-see spots using public transportation. That’s why we recommend choosing a car hire with a driver option.

To address concerns about safety, inefficient transportation, and the hot climate near the equator, many European travelers choose the car hire with a driver option.

It’s door-to-door—from your hotel straight to the entrance of each World Heritage site—and you can leave your luggage in the car while you explore.

That means even with limited vacation time, you can make the most of every day from morning to night. And because the price is per vehicle, it can even work out cheaper than public transportation when traveling with two or more people.
