The Tea Train journey from Kandy to Ella is one of the world’s most spectacular railway journeys, traversing Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands at a leisurely pace.
Outside the window, layers of tea plantation green unfold, revealing mist-shrouded mountains, waterfalls, and the simple daily life of a local station. That said, the entire journey is surprisingly long, taking around 6 to 7 hours in reality.
EmmaTo enjoy your trip without disrupting your itinerary, the quickest way is to first determine which sections are the most scenic and what to do if tickets are unavailable.
This article provides practical guidance to help travellers from Europe plan with confidence, covering how to select the best scenic sections, booking tips, realistic alternatives for same-day travel, and efficient ways to combine journeys with private charters.
What is the Tea Train?
The so-called ‘Tea Train’ running between Kandy and Ella in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands is a railway journey renowned worldwide for its spectacular scenery.
Covering approximately 160 kilometres over roughly seven hours, the route traverses lush mountainous terrain and tea plantations stretching as far as the eye can see.
RaviPraised in travel guides and by visitors from around the world as “one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world”, it enjoys immense popularity and is widely recognised among European and American tourists as “a train you must ride at least once in your lifetime”.

This railway line was constructed by the British colonial government in the 19th century and was originally laid to transport tea leaves produced in the highlands to the capital, Colombo.
EmmaIt is now more than just a means of transport; it has become a highlight of Sri Lankan tourism, attracting travellers from around the world.z

The sight of the tea train’s vivid blue carriages winding through emerald tea plantations has become a symbol of Sri Lankan tourism, gracing social media feeds and guidebook covers.
For travellers from Europe in particular, the combination of railways evoking the British colonial era and tea cultivation holds an exotic and compelling allure.
EmmaThat said, one blind spot due to its popularity is that the journey is surprisingly lengthy.
RaviTravelling the entire route from Candy to Ella takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, and time passes at a leisurely pace due to the train’s slow speed as it winds its way up and down the mountainous terrain.

Trains frequently run late, but this lax attitude to punctuality is part of the charm of this railway journey. Indeed, the real pleasure lies in being lulled by the train’s leisurely pace while savouring the magnificent panoramas unfolding beyond the window to your heart’s content.
EmmaThe scenery along the way is truly breathtaking.
RaviTerraced tea fields spread across the rolling hills, jungles dotted with palm trees, and distant waterfalls and mountain ranges shrouded in mist—the unique, breathtaking scenery of a southern highland unfolds before you.
As you approach Ella, the altitude increases and the air grows cooler, the scenery becoming ever more dramatic. Towards the end, the famous Nine Arch Bridge also comes into view.

Inside the carriages, one can sense the warmth and daily life of the Sri Lankan people. Within station precincts and aboard the trains, local vendors roam selling sweets and tea; purchasing and savouring chai or samosas further heightens the travel experience.
RaviIf you’re lucky, you might encounter a cheerful musician singing and playing the drums on board, and scenes where passengers clap along can really liven up the journey.
Not only tourists but also local commuters and students board the train, offering opportunities for cultural exchange through gestures like offering seats and exchanging smiles and pleasantries.
It is precisely this blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences that makes railway travel so appealing, and why the Tea Train continues to draw travellers from around the world.
How to Book Tickets for the Tea Train
The Tea Train is an immensely popular route, so advance booking of reserved seats is almost essential.
Seats tend to sell out immediately upon booking opening, particularly during peak season and long holiday periods in Europe and America, making direct purchase via the official website notoriously difficult.
RaviIn fact, on the Sri Lanka State Railway’s official booking site, agents and tour operators snap up seats immediately after they go on sale, making it virtually impossible for ordinary travellers to secure a reservation on the spot.
EmmaTherefore, to ensure you secure a seat, it is advisable to book through a reliable agent.
Using third-party booking services such as 12Go Asia (12go.asia) is particularly effective and is recommended to many travellers.
The UK rail travel expert Seat61 even recommends using 12Go Asia over its official website, and indeed this is the smoothest way to secure tickets.

The process is straightforward: simply submit a booking request via the website at least 32 days prior to your desired travel date.
12Go will then act as your agent to secure your tickets on behalf of Sri Lanka State Railways on the day bookings open, significantly increasing your chances of securing your preferred train and seat.

The Sri Lanka State Railway’s official online booking site is also operational. Cards issued overseas can be used, and after booking, the voucher must be exchanged for a physical ticket at the station counter.
However, at present, the number of seats available and the routes covered are limited, and unless the timing is right, the system is constantly showing full capacity, making it impractical to use.
EmmaI have never once managed to purchase it through official channels.
Unless you have ample time in your itinerary and can make multiple attempts in advance, it is advisable not to insist on using the official website and instead utilise agencies such as 12Go.
Column: What to Do When You Can’t Get a Reservation
If you are unable to secure a reservation, you may consider relying on local connections. In such cases, a private charter with a driver proves invaluable.
RaviSome drivers are acquainted with station staff and can arrange tickets specially.
For example, with LankaMe, our local senior manager has connections with station staff, meaning they may be able to arrange tickets even when booking sites show full capacity. (※) Naturally, this is not guaranteed.
EmmaIn fact, when I travelled to Sri Lanka, I had LankaMe arrange my tickets!

If, even after using the above methods, you are unable to secure a reservation, does that mean you simply cannot board?
RaviRest assured, even if reserved seating is unavailable, there is still a way to board the Tea Train. That is by using a same-day unreserved seat ticket.
On Sri Lankan railways, alongside reserved first-class and second-class carriages, unreserved second-class and third-class carriages are also coupled to trains.
Tickets for these unreserved seats can be purchased directly at the station on the day of travel and are extremely cheap, costing only a few hundred yen.

EmmaAs mentioned earlier, LankaMe’s Driver service also assists with purchasing locally!
However, the drawback is that there is no guarantee of a seat. On popular trains, seats are often fully occupied by departure time, meaning passengers boarding en route frequently find themselves standing.
Indeed, many tourists unable to secure reserved seats travel in unreserved carriages, with some recounting experiences of “standing for nearly six to seven hours”.
The carriages sway, and the connecting areas are packed with people, making even moving to the toilet difficult. The reality is that standing for long periods is quite gruelling.
For short distances, some hardy souls might place their rucksack on the floor to sit on, or perch in a corner of the gangway to enjoy the scenery. However, neither physically nor hygienically is this recommended for extended periods.
EmmaWe recommend the following sections for approximately one-hour journeys! Even standing room offers plenty of enjoyment for a journey of around an hour!
Recommended Scenic Route between Kandy to Ella
If you’re thinking, “I’d love to ride the Tea Train, but I don’t have time for the entire journey,” or “Spending hours on board makes me a bit uneasy…” rest assured.
EmmaThe beautiful scenery along the Tea Train route can be sampled in bite-sized chunks, focusing solely on the most picturesque sections.
RaviBy utilising a chartered car, you can flexibly board at intermediate stations, allowing you to savour the essence of scenic train journeys without enduring lengthy rides.
Here we introduce two sections particularly recommended for time-pressed travellers or those less confident in their stamina. Both offer approximately one-hour journeys allowing you to enjoy the iconic scenery of the Tea Train.
Dividing the route between Kandy and Ella into two sections yields the Kandy–Nanu Oya and Nanu Oya–Ella segments.
For those returning from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo, we recommend travelling the Kandy to Nanu Oya section. For those wishing to visit Yala or Galle, we suggest travelling the latter section between Nanu Oya and Ella.
Enjoy the breathtaking tea plantation views! Hatton to Nanu Oya section
The section between Hatton Station and Nanu Oya Station is highly recommended as a particularly scenic stretch.
The train journey from Kandy to Nanu Oya, the nearest station to Nuwara Eliya, takes approximately 4 to 5 hours in total. It is said that the scenery becomes particularly splendid from Hatton onwards, which is the latter half of the journey.

The sight of the multiple shades of green stretching to the sky—tea plantations and forests—is truly breathtaking.
Hatton Station, which also serves as the starting point for climbing Sri Pada (known in English as Adam’s Peak), a sacred site in Hinduism and Buddhism, sees considerable tourist use.
The train journey from there to Nanu Oya Station (the gateway station to the highland town of Nuwara Eliya) takes just over an hour.

You can enjoy the most spectacular views in a short time, as if the highlights of the Tea Train were condensed into this zone.
For a journey of this duration, even if you cannot secure a reserved seat and end up standing in the unreserved section, it is unlikely to feel particularly burdensome. Indeed, it is not uncommon to see travellers standing near the carriage doors, camera in hand, enjoying the spectacular views.
This section perfectly caters to the desire to ride just for the spectacular views, even if you can’t get a seat.
A recommended itinerary would be to pre-emptively travel by chartered car from Kandy to Hatton, board the train from there, alight at Nanu Oya station, and be met by the car again.
EmmaAfter meeting up at Nanuoya, you can either continue sightseeing in Nuwara Eliya town or drive on to your next destination.
RaviWith this plan, you won’t need to endure long hours on a train, and even with limited time, you’ll be able to savour the essence of the Tea Train.
Cross the Nine Arch Bridge! The Bandarawela–Demodara Section
The section between Bandarawela Station and Demodara Station is highly recommended as a scenic stretch towards Ella (towards the end of the line).
By boarding at Bandarwella, one station before Ella, you can experience the highlight section of the journey by train from Ella station onwards.

The highlight of this section is undoubtedly the Nine Arch Bridge and the Demodara Loop Line.
The Nine Arch Bridge, a stone arch bridge completed in 1921, is world-renowned as a scenic spot symbolising the Tea Train, with its nine arches beautifully spanning the deep green valley.
The experience of crossing this bridge by train, seen from the carriage window, is arguably the highlight of any railway journey in Sri Lanka.

At Demodara Station, you can experience the unique railway structure known as the Demodara Loop, where the tracks are laid in a spiral pattern so that they pass beneath themselves.
RaviAfter the train departs the station, it plunges into a tunnel, passing directly beneath the very station it has just left behind as it descends into the valley below. It is astonishing.

This Demodalo Loop and Nine Arch Bridge is often discussed as a set, and is highly regarded by railway enthusiasts as a section where one can simultaneously enjoy the unique ingenuity of the Tea Train and the scenic beauty.
EmmaThe journey time between Bandarwella and Demodara is approximately one hour. As many tourists disembark at the intermediate station of Ella, the carriage tends to become relatively less crowded during the latter part of the journey.
RaviIt could be said that this is a section where the likelihood of securing a seat increases.
The recommended plan is to take a chartered car ahead to Bandarwella just before Ella, board the train from there, enjoy the scenic section, then alight at Demodara station and be picked up by car.

After meeting up again at Demodara Station, you can flexibly arrange your itinerary, either heading directly by car to a hotel in Ella town or travelling further southeast towards Yala National Park.

The journey between Ella and Yala takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by car, but incorporating a train journey partway through can also serve as a pleasant change of pace.
Summary
That concludes our summary of the charm of the Tea Train and how to enjoy it wisely.
The railway journey between Kandy and Ella, where you can simultaneously savour the panoramic grandeur of nature and the warmth of a different culture, is sure to provide unforgettable memories even for seasoned European travellers.
Even when extended journeys prove challenging, with a little ingenuity you can still sample the highlights. So do tailor your itinerary to savour the ‘world’s most spectacular scenic train’. The refreshing mountain air and the aroma of tea in Sri Lanka will surely beckon you onto a most delightful journey.
